Como ya sabemos, la actividad física diaria aporta una gran cantidad de beneficios a nuestro organismo. Sin embargo, esto no es sólo unos pocos beneficios simples, porque hacer ejercicio aumenta la esperanza de vida de cuatro y cinco años , si es un hábito regular.

¿El ejercicio aumenta la esperanza de vida?

Según los diferentes estudios realizados por el Instituto Nacional del Cáncer de los Estados Unidos, se confirmó que el ejercicio aumenta la esperanza de vida durante algunos años .

Para ello, es necesario hacer una actividad física moderada, más de tres horas a la semana, con ejercicios tan simples como caminar con un ritmo un poco más rápido de lo habitual.

Además, fue posible observar que las personas que tenían sobrepeso, pero hacían algún tipo de ejercicio, también tenían una esperanza de vida más larga que las que tenían un peso adecuado, pero llevaban una vida sedentaria.

A veces es más cómodo quedarse en casa, pero los resultados que lograremos si persistimos en el esfuerzo pueden motivarnos.

Para las personas que tienen dificultades para cumplir con estas horas de actividad física, contamos con que también se observaron beneficios en la esperanza de vida de las personas que dedicaban al menos una hora y media a la semana . El aumento fue menor, de unos dos años; pero siempre es mejor algo que nada.

El autor principal de los estudios hizo las siguientes afirmaciones sobre los resultados:

«Nuestros resultados destacan la importante contribución que el tiempo libre dedicado a la actividad física, especialmente entre los adultos, puede hacer a la longevidad. El ejercicio regular prolongó la vida de todas las personas que fueron examinadas en nuestro estudio, con peso normal, sobrepeso u obesidad»

Recomendaciones de la OMS sobre actividad física

La Organización Mundial de la Salud, más conocida como OMS, recomienda un cierto número de horas de actividad física por semana según el grupo de edad para mantener un peso adecuado, ser saludable y así aumentar la esperanza de vida.

De cinco a 17 años

Para los niños y adolescentes de este grupo de edad se recomienda realizar una hora de actividad física moderada pero vigorosa, es decir, falta de aliento al intentar hablar y hacer ejercicio al mismo tiempo. Además, también se recomienda hacer ejercicios intensos tres veces a la semana.

En la adolescencia, el ejercicio promueve el desarrollo del cuerpo de una manera significativa.

De 18 a 64 años

Para los adultos de este grupo de edad, la OMS recomienda hacer unas dos horas y media de actividad física moderada por semana; o una hora y media si es intensa. Además, también se recomienda la práctica de actividades enfocadas al fortalecimiento muscular dos veces por semana.

65 años o más

Para las personas mayores de esa edad, se recomienda que practiquen los mismos ejercicios que los adultos.

Pero además, también deberían añadir, tres veces a la semana, actividades que ayuden a mejorar el equilibrio para prevenir caídas; especialmente las personas que podrían estar más afectadas, como las que tienen movilidad reducida.

Además de ser esencial para el mantenimiento de la salud, la actividad física contribuye a mejorar la calidad de vida, ya que aporta beneficios tanto fisiológicos como psicológicos y sociales .

Las personas que realizan algún tipo de actividad física a menudo se sienten más saludables, menos estresadas y en un mejor estado de ánimo.

Además de estos beneficios, la práctica de actividades físicas también tiene sus ventajas sobre nuestros aspectos fisiológicos, lo que se relaciona con el hecho de que el ejercicio aumenta la esperanza de vida.

Algunos ejemplos son mejor digestión y regularidad del ritmo intestinal, desarrollo óseo y mantenimiento de la masa ósea, prevenir el desarrollo de la hipertensión y mejorar el nivel de lípidos en la sangre, entre muchas otras ventajas.

En la esfera social, la actividad física también tiene sus ventajas; porque ayuda al rendimiento escolar, previene malos hábitos como fumar o beber alcohol y aumenta la autonomía.

En conclusión, hacer ejercicio aumenta nuestra esperanza de vida. Así que, como hemos visto, hacer algunos ejercicios simples a lo largo de la semana será suficiente para aumentar la esperanza de vida hasta en cuatro años.

Además, también debemos practicar algún tipo de actividad física para obtener otros beneficios a nivel fisiológico y social.
